the 4 C's

carat

Diamonds are measured in carats, but it's not just about size – it's about weight. The carat weight affects the diamond's price, but other factors like cut, color, and clarity matter too. Don't be fooled by size alone; a well-cut diamond can look larger than a poorly cut one. Remember, as carat weight increases, so does the rarity and price. But it's not a linear increase – it's exponential. So, two 0.5 carat diamonds won't cost the same as one 1 carat diamond.

Even though carat doesn't tell you the dimensions, there's a handy chart for estimated sizes. For instance, a 6.5mm diamond is around 1 carat. Check out our mm to carat conversion chart for more details.

cut

A diamond's cut is about how well it's proportioned, its symmetry, and polish – not its shape. It's all about the depth and how the facets play with light. Skilled work is crucial to make sure the diamond reflects maximum light and brightness. The GIA grades Round diamonds from Excellent to Poor. An excellent cut diamond shines with both white and coloured light, while a poor cut one might look dark and dull.

At Lala, we're all about quality. We don't do "Fair" or "Good" cuts. Every diamond over 1/2 carat is handpicked, meeting our high standards for quality and value.

color

Diamond color matters. It's about the actual hue within the diamond. "Higher color" means less color, showcasing more white and making it ideal. The Gemological Institute of America grades diamonds from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow/brown). The less color (higher on the scale), the rarer and pricier the diamond. D-F is "Colorless," H-J is "Near Colorless."

We believe diamond color is a crucial factor in your purchase.

clarity

Diamonds and other gems often have inclusions, which might not be visible without a loupe or microscope. If you can't see them with the naked eye, it's called "Eye-Clean," meaning inclusions are there but don't affect the diamond's beauty.
